TEENAGE IS NOT A DISEASE

Easter Sillies:

"What do you get if you pour boiling water down a rabbit hole?"
(Hot Cross Bunnies)
"Why did the Easter Egg hide?"
(he was a little chicken!)
"What did the bunny want to do when it grew up?"
(join the Hare Force!)
"What do you need if your chocolate eggs mysteriously disappear?"
(an "eggsplanation!") sorry for my "BR" rated jokes....(BirgeRated)

Birge-Bytes: Old age is when former classmates are so gray and wrinkled
they don't recognize YOU!.   When you are dissatisfied and want to return to your youth? Think of Algebra! How old would YOU be if
you didn't know how old you are?
Some people would like to turn back their odometers. Not me. I want people to know "why" I look this way. I've travelled a long way and some of the roads were not paved!

The "Sub culture" we refer to as "TEENAGERS" didn't even EXIST 70 years ago!  Ten years before that most children 13-19 worked for a living on farms, factories or at home. When they got married they left home.
There was no separate  culture: "teen" music, movies or fashion.

Because of the Great Depression (20's)  few jobs were available & this caused the youth to leave home earlier with LOTS of problems being away from family....SO.....this caused President Franklin Roosevelt to start job training programs (vocational ed) & much more emphasis on
HIGH SCHOOLS! Before this, in 1900 only 6% of 17 year olds got a Diploma....By 1939  75% of 14-17 were high school students.
THE IDEA WAS FOR YOUTH TO BE TRAINED IN A DISCIPLINED AND WHOLESOME ENVIRONMENT. PARENTS FOCUSED ON SUCCESS & FUTURE GOALS.....KIDS FOCUSED ON EACH OTHER & IN CREATING THEIR OWN "teenage culture". (A world of
radio, music, dancing and FUN)DUH!!!!!!!! They created their OWN music, dance and FADS.

By the early 40's the FIRST TEENAGE GENERATION were called "Bobby Soxers" that lived to dance...mostly the Big Bands. They annoyed their parents with their own slang words("cats pajamas" etc) & Fan Clubs.
I was a "member" of the SECOND GENERATION first called "teeners"
(between 13-19)& quickly changed it to teenagers that year...NOT CHILDREN ANYMORE BUT NOT ADULTS, EITHER! Focus on dating, driving, dancing and FUN; equally annoying to parents!  This is called "Generational Identity" and you keep it a lifetime. At 72 I still love
Elvis...the clothes we wore...the friends...the angst!

Advertisers saw the HUGE MONEY($$$$) POTENTIAL OF A "NEW" CULTURE WITH MONEY TO SPEND AND WENT FOR IT LIKE A SHARK FRENZY. I used almost all my allowance on "sheet music" and Elvis.

Teenagers today live in a GLOBAL PLURALITY unknown to previous generations....a Plurality & acceptance of many ideas & philosophies.
Hence, they are now exposed to the BEST and WORST of ALL cultures! NEVER before have PARENTS been MORE important with less TIME. TEENAGERS NEED PARENTS. If not, they "replace them"
with gangs, peer groups or friends they meet outside the family.
At the root of much teenage behavior is a teenager that not "Feel" the love & acceptance of their parents. At this age (13-19) INDEPENDENCE & FINDING SELF-IDENTITY are their primary searches.

p.s. Check back to the "5 Languages of Love" assessment in my website & my next Blog will be on Helping & Loving this "new" person in your life, your Son or Daughter! Let me know what you think....Mrs.B.
